Otway Basin resource and land use planning

Drone image near CamperdownAs part of the Victorian Gas Program's (VGP) scientific research into the risks, benefits and impacts of onshore conventional gas, a strategic land assessment of the south west region is being undertaken.

The assessment will identify areas of significance and sensitivity that would need to be considered if the current moratorium on onshore conventional gas was lifted in mid-2020 and exploration and development was allowed.

The first step in this process involved preparing a land inventory by using authoritative datasets to map the region's unique natural, cultural, environmental, economic and social land uses, features and values.

The data was collated into seven land use themes and scored in terms of how appropriate onshore conventional gas exploration or development would be in the local context. The outcome of this process is a preliminary land model of south west Victoria.

Regional stakeholders and local residents are invited to view the preliminary model and provide feedback and local insights.

Community workshops are being held across the south west region in October and November 2019.

The final Land Use Model will:

  • highlight areas of sensitivity or significance that may constrain the potential for onshore conventional gas exploration or production, and
  • inform advice to government on the risks, benefits and impacts of onshore conventional gas.

A similar assessment process will take place in the Gippsland region in early 2020.
