Fingerboards Mineral Sand Project

The Fingerboards Mineral Sands project is located in Glenaladale, between Stratford and Bairnsdale in East Gippsland. The project proposes to develop a mineral sands deposit in the area.

Kalbar Ltd and its subsidiary Kalbar Operations Pty Ltd (Kalbar), Australian companies, hold a number of licences and licence applications related to the project.

Current status

In late February 2022 Kalbar withdrew their application for a mineral sands mining licence in East Gippsland, which formed part of the Fingerboards Mineral Sands Project.

The company still has a number of retention licences and exploration licence applications in the area. No mining activity can take place under these licences.

The decision to withdraw the mining licence application was made by Kalbar. For information about their decision or intentions for other licences, please contact Kalbar directly:

Background

In 2016 the Minister for Planning determined an Environmental Effects Statement was required for the Fingerboards Mineral Sands Project under the Environment Effects Act 1978. An Environmental Effects Statement (EES) is an assessment of the potential impacts or effects of a proposed project or development on the environment.

In November 2021, following public exhibition of the EES, public hearings and a report from the independent Fingerboards Inquiry and Advisory Committee, the Minister for Planning concluded that the Fingerboards project should not proceed in its current form.

Regulatory compliance

If work commences under any licence that is held by Kalbar, we will ensure that Kalbar complies with any conditions of its licence. Read more about regulatory compliance.
