Memoranda of Understanding
What is a MOU?
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a formal agreement between two or more parties. The agreement allows government departments and agencies to clarify roles for a working relationship or an interim contract.
Why do regulators use them?
Earth Resources Regulation has agreements to ensure our activities support those of other regulators. These work agreements identify how we manage potential overlaps in our work. Each agreement details how we work together when required.
We have MOU or Working Agreements in place with the Victorian WorkCover Authority, the Environment Protection Authority, the Country Fire Authority and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
Victorian WorkCover Authority (WorkSafe)
The Victorian WorkCover Authority is responsible for enforcing Victoria's occupational health and safety laws and preventing workplace injuries.
Environment Protection Authority
The Environment Protection Authority's (EPA) role is to regulate pollution, and it has independent authority to make regulatory decisions under the Environment Protection Act 1970.
Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is responsible for Victoria's programs for environment, climate change, water, planning and local government.
This Memorandum of Understanding was established between the former Department of Primary Industries and the former Department of Sustainability and Environment.
Country Fire Authority
The Country Fire Authority is responsible for the prevention and suppression of fire and protection of life and property in regional and rural Victoria. ERR and CFA work closely together in both preparedness and response to emergency events. This MOU establishes rights and responsibilities between both parties to carrying out joint training and associated fire prevention activities related to open cut coal mines.
