Videos show a deep understanding of Victoria's geology

A better understanding of how Victoria’s geology evolved over the last 500 million years is set to stimulate curious minds around the world at a major international science film festival.

Beneath the Australian Alps and The Stavely Arc – Uncovering the Geological Evolution in Victoria, both commissioned by the Geological Survey of Victoria, will be shown at the SCINEMA International Science Film Festival 2021 during August.

Film makers Clive Willman and Davide Michielin are in the running for the festival’s best film. Winners are expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

SCINEMA is the largest science film festival in the southern hemisphere showcasing the best in science cinema by some of the world’s most respected science producers and directors.

Beneath the Australian Alps outlines the geological processes that have resulted in the creation of the Australian Alps and the role of the Southeast Lachlan Deep Crustal Seismic Reflection Survey in helping geoscientists learn more than ever before about the area.

The Stavely Arc takes viewers on a journey to discover the dynamic activity that occurred in western Victoria and how geoscientists defined the Stavely Arc.

Geological Survey of Victoria Director Paul McDonald described the films as informative and inspiring.

“These films give a clear picture of what lies beneath parts of regional Victoria and promotes a better understanding of the processes’ involved in gathering geological information and the development of new knowledge.

“Ultimately, the data gathered will inform future resource management decisions to help deliver the best outcomes for regional communities.”

The films will be available through the SCINEMA website during August as part of National Science Week and can be viewed at the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions YouTube channel .
