I live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, can I go fossicking for gold or gems?

Yes. If you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, you can go fossicking, except only within metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire. You can only fossick with one other person or members of your household. You cannot fossick outside of metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire.

I live outside these areas, can I go fossicking gold or gems?

Yes, if you live outside of metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, you can go fossicking, however you must not enter metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire to go fossicking.

You can gather in groups of up to 10 to go fossicking and you must ensure 1.5 metres is maintained between yourself and others that you do not live with.

You can only fossick in areas where it is legal to fossick and you must carry a valid Miner’s Right.
