Earth Resources Regulation conducted an inspection of the tailings storage facility at Ballarat Gold Mine regarding water pooling on 1 November.

Following a notice issued to Balmaine Gold on 20 October 2021 regarding water pooling at the tailings storage facility at Ballarat Gold Mine, Earth Resources Regulation conducted an inspection on 1 November.

That inspection identified the facility was not being operated in accordance with the operational requirements and staff were not appropriately trained or experienced in the management of tailings storage facilities.

Earth Resources Regulation has issued Balmaine Gold with a remedial notice requiring it to ensure that a suitably experienced tailings engineer is on-site to oversee operations. The notice also requires monthly updates and assessments of the tailing storage facility be provided to Earth Resources Regulation.
