Quarries are an important part of the Victorian economy and as we build more homes, schools, hospitals and transport infrastructure. The Victorian government is interested in your views on new regulations that will guide the future of one of the state’s most important sectors.

The Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 oversees mining and quarrying in Victoria. The section of the Act that relates to quarrying sunsets on 27 January 2020.

A thorough public consultation process, including the preparation of a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS), will be undertaken before the new regulations are finalised.

The new regulations will aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the sector by reducing red tape while encouraging an outcome-based approach to managing risk through work plans.

The draft regulations were formed in consultation with key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Better Regulation, Cement and Concrete Aggregates Australia, the Construction Material Processors Association and the Victorian Farmers Federation.

This process requires that a regulatory impact statement is prepared and made available for public consultation.
