The public submission periods for three minerals exploration licence applications in east Gippsland will close on 1 September 2021.

Basin Minerals Holdings Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Iluka Resources, has applied for three minerals exploration licences to search for mineral sands around Sarsfield, Tambo Upper, Bumberrah, Nowa Nowa, Tostaree and Wairewa.

The minerals exploration licence application process provides an opportunity for landholders and community members to make submissions based on specific grounds.  For more information on how to make a submission visit our Have Your Say page.

Minerals exploration is a different activity to mining – it is the first step in determining if any minerals are present. Explorers use low-impact methods to understand local geology and look for evidence of minerals over a large area, then typically focus activities on a smaller zone.

If an exploration licence is granted and a commercially viable deposit is identified, a separate process toward mining would involve environmental assessment and extensive local engagement.
