Getting airborne to peer beneath the surface
Geoscience Australia is conducting an airborne electromagnetic survey across western Victoria until the end of June 2021 as part of its Exploring for the Future program.
Geoscience Australia is conducting an airborne electromagnetic survey across western Victoria until the end of June 2021 as part of its Exploring for the Future program.
The program is gathering data about the potential groundwater, mineral and energy resources beneath the surface. This information, which will be publicly available, will assist resource management and investment decisions.
Airborne electromagnetic surveying involves the use of light aircraft fitted with specialist equipment to map variations in the electrical conductivity of the ground to a depth of several hundred metres. No ground contact is involved.
Communities across the state’s west may see a fixed-wing aircraft that is towing equipment below it flying about 100 metres above the ground.
Information about airborne electromagnetic surveys is available at ga.gov.au.
