Geological data promotes exploration investment

New minerals information has been made available to promote a better understanding of Victoria’s geology and reduce the costs and risks associated with early-stage exploration activity.

New minerals information has been made available to promote a better understanding of Victoria’s geology and reduce the costs and risks associated with early-stage exploration activity.

Mineral licence holders submit their annual exploration activity report and associated data to Earth Resources Regulation, which can be made publicly available after the licence has expired.

Sharing this information promotes new investment in regional Victoria through minerals exploration.

The release of information from 51 licences and over 300 reports add to a comprehensive catalogue maintained by Geological Survey of Victoria, with a quarter of a million records currently available and free to access.

The data collected on these former licences represent a significant expenditure on exploration and mining, around two thirds of which focus on gold which is trading at record prices.

The data will be of interest to minerals explorers looking to repurpose the information without having to repeat the work and supports earlier informed decision making.
