The Victorian Government is investing in research that aims to boost the state’s energy export capacity, reduce greenhouse emissions and help deliver well-paid regional jobs.

The Victorian Government is investing in research that aims to boost the state’s energy export capacity, reduce greenhouse emissions and help deliver well-paid regional jobs.

The ten-year commitment to the Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre will see the Victorian Government contribute $500,000 to focused research on energy export opportunities that will assist the implementation of theVictorian Renewable Hydrogen Industry Development Plan and Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy.

The research centre provides an opportunity for Victoria to create, retain, and benefit from its status as a major global energy exporter of hydrogen and natural gas.

The investment supports the CarbonNet project, which is exploring the possibility of reducing CO₂ emissions through a carbon transportation and storage network in Gippsland.

If it is commercialised, CarbonNet will enable the Japanese-led Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain Project in the Latrobe Valley.

Exploring production of exportable quantities of hydrogen from renewable sources such as wind and solar are also possible through the research centre.

Commercial hydrogen production for export assists the development of potential new industries in Gippsland and well-paid local jobs.

The Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre is supported by the Australian Government, several Australian universities, state governments and the energy industry.
