CarbonNet set to capture community interest

Locals with a passion for Gippsland’s future and a desire to contribute to action on emissions reductions are encouraged to put their hand up for CarbonNet’s Community Reference Group.

CarbonNet, a Commonwealth and Victorian government funded project, is investigating the possibility of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) network in Gippsland, potentially reducing industrial emissions while creating new industries, investment and local jobs.

The newly-formed reference group will play an important role in forming a conversation with Gippsland communities and advising CarbonNet about local issues.

CarbonNet supports emissions reduction by potentially connecting carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture projects across the Latrobe Valley and storing the collected CO₂ under Bass Strait. Rock layers trap the CO₂ – similar to the way gas has been stored naturally for millions of years.

CCS is a proven process, safely operating for 45 years, with 23 commercial scale projects underway globally. Through using CCS a number of international facilities, including power generators, ethanol and fertiliser producers, and hydrogen and natural gas processing plants are contributing to emissions reductions.

Since 2008, a CCS demonstration project has been running successfully in Victoria’s Otways.

Locals interested in contributing to Gippsland’s outlook by participating in the reference group do not need previous experience. However, commitment, drive and the ability to participate in meetings are essential.
