State and Commonwealth Waters

On 1 January 2012, two Commonwealth Government agencies assumed responsibility for all petroleum activities located more than three nautical miles offshore of Victoria. These agencies are the:

• National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA)
• National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA)

The Victorian Government retains responsibility for onshore areas and offshore coastal waters to the three nautical mile boundary.
