Legislation

The main legislation under which Victoria’s mineral resources are managed, is the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.

Guides

Several guides are available to help landholders and communities understand key aspects of how minerals exploration is regulated, particularly regarding explorers accessing privately owned land.

Landholders seeking to understand more about their rights in relation to minerals exploration on their property can access the Minerals Exploration and Mining in Victoria: Landholder Information Booklet

The Victorian Farmers Federation and the Mineral Council of Australia have developed a landowner’s guide to the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990, with specific information and recommendations on land access.

Titled the Introduction to Victoria’s Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990, this document provides an overview of the Act and provides suggestions for both land holders and licence holders, as they negotiate the various requirements.
