About Earth Resources

The Resources portfolio is supported by the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions.

The Resources portfolio includes policy development, legislative and regulatory reform, investment facilitation and the implementation of key government initiatives. Earth Resources Regulation is the is the resources and mining industry regulator in Victoria. 

Victoria's earth resources industries continue to support the economic development of the state, with opportunities to increase investment in earth resources, secure regional and economic benefits and improve the performance of the sector.

The department plays a key role in driving improvement activities in these sectors, with a focus on:

  • attracting and facilitating investment in coal, gas, and targeted mineral resources
  • responsibly managing and securing access to earth resources for current and future use
  • supporting investment in technological development within the earth resources sectors
  • providing an efficient regulatory framework that enables development while effectively managing the potential risks to the environment and community.
Since 1 January 2019, the Resources portfolio is part of the new Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions. This site is being updated to reflect this change.

New Minister for Resources

Following the swearing in of the Hon. Jaclyn Symes MP on Thursday 13 December 2018, Victoria has a new Minister for Resources.Jaclyn Symes.

Some content on this website will be updated to reflect this change.

Minister Symes has been the upper house member for Northern Victoria since 2014. This area includes Victoria's largest gold mine at Fosterville and many of the state's important quarries.

Minister Symes also has responsibility for the Agriculture and Regional Development portfolios.
